Hire floors are quoted in feet — 12 × 12, 16 × 16 and 20 × 20 ft are the workhorse sizes, and the floor size is the number that matters. Board counts are illustrative: floors are not all made the same, and different manufacturers use different panel systems (4 × 2 ft interlocking boards laid brick-bond with half-boards staggering the joints, 2 × 2 ft panels, 60 × 60 cm LED panels…), so your supplier will quote their own counts for the same size. Go up a size for a young, lively crowd (use the 60–70% presets above) and roughly double the space for a ceilidh or barn dance, where sets need room to form up and spin.

The single best upgrade to an LED starlit floor is a dry-ice low-fog effect for the first dance. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide: the fog it makes is cold and dense, so it hugs the floor in a rolling, knee-deep cloud instead of rising and filling the room — the couple appear to be dancing on a cloud, with the starlit LEDs glinting through the fog. It photographs beautifully and it's the effect behind most of the wedding-magazine first-dance shots you've seen.
Plan for about 40 dancers at peak (40% of guests) at 0.5 m² each — roughly 20 m². That's the classic 16 × 16 ft hire size (4.9 × 4.9 m). In a 4 × 2 ft board system that's roughly 28 boards plus 8 half-boards, though panel systems vary by manufacturer.
30–40% at any one time is typical for weddings and mixed-age parties. A young crowd, disco or club night can hit 60–70% at peak — size up rather than down, because a packed floor empties fast when people can't move.
There's no single standard — floors are not all made the same. Many UK-manufactured portable floors use 4 × 2 ft interlocking boards, laid brick-bond in 2 ft courses with 2 × 2 ft half-boards closing alternate rows so the joints stagger (a chequerboard floor carries two 2 ft squares per board); other systems use 2 × 2 ft panels or 60 × 60 cm LED panels. All finish with sloped edge ramps around the outside — ask your supplier what system they run.
Yes — roughly double the space per dancer (about 1 m² each). Sets need room to form up, swing and spin, so a ceilidh for 60 dancers wants around 60 m², not 30.
A two-person crew lays a 16 × 16 ft floor in about 45 minutes to an hour, including the edge ramps. Add time for carry-in if access is poor, and the same again for strip-down. LED floors also need a controller connected and tested.
In a marquee, yes — on proper marquee boarding or a subfloor so it's flat and dry. Straight onto grass, no: panels sink, joints open up and LED floors can be damaged by damp. Outdoor use needs a dedicated inside-outside flooring system.
Yes — it's the one requirement you can't work around. Interlocking panels only lock properly on a smooth, level, dry base: on an uneven floor they rock, the joints strain apart, LED connections fail and the edge ramps lift into a trip hazard. The trade works to roughly 25 mm of variation over 3 m (about 1 inch over 10 ft); beyond that the area needs levelling or a built subfloor first.
Yes — it's the classic pairing for a first dance. A professional dry-ice low-fog machine rolls a knee-deep cloud across the floor for about 3–5 minutes (one song), the starlit LEDs glint through it, and it leaves no residue and won't trigger smoke alarms. Do get the venue's approval early (some ban all fog effects), and have it run by a professional — CO₂ collects at floor level, so it needs a proper machine and a ventilated room, not a DIY bucket of dry ice.
